Several disappointments. Ben's exclusion was certainly shocking. Argo is an excellent, tense, very well directed movie that I think is one of the best of the year. He'll definitely be in the winner's spot one day and he HAS received many accolades but the failure to acknowledge his excellent work with an Oscar nom is a surprising snub.
Kathryn Bigelow's absence is also surprising but all the controversy about the torture scenes makes it less so.
Had my hopes high Rachel Weisz' beautiful work in The Deep Blue Sea would be honored although it was a long shot, no such luck but at least she can console herself with Daniel Craig! The rest of us should be so lucky.
Was also sorry Ann Dowd wasn't nominated for Compliance but they found a spot to once again tap the average Amy Adams. Mind bogglingly she has with only a mediocre gift managed to now tie such acting giants as Lee Grant, Maureen Stapleton, Ethel Barrymore and Agnes freaking Moorehead! with four supporting nominations! That alone has diminished the award in my eyes.
As far as that clown show this morning where they announced the nominations if that's the best Seth MacFarlane can do the show is going to be one long slog.
I agree with you, Joel, that Ms. Adams isn't in the same league as the acting giants you mention. But I did like her in Junebug and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.
And I definitely agree with you about Mr. MacFarlane, who will hopefully be much more amusing come Oscar night.
