TV Flashback: My 10 Favorite Charlie's Angels Episodes

If you grew up watching ABC's original Charlie's Angels, I recommend that you check out the groovy new second edition of Mike Pingel's book, Channel Surfing: Charlie's Angels, which takes an in-depth look at the classic television series (click here to purchase it on Amazon). Included are interviews with five Angels - Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd and Tanya Roberts - as well as such guest stars as Bo Hopkins, Audrey Landers, Judy Landers and Bob Seagren. There are also chapters on the show's collectable merchandise, filming locations, and other Angels-influenced TV shows and films. And, of course, Pingel has included an informative episode guide, which has inspired me today to list my own 10 favorite episodes (in chronological order) out of the 109 that were produced between 1976 and 1981:

1) "Angels in Chains" (Episode 4, Season 1 - October 20, 1976)
Everyone probably remembers this episode, in which Sabrina, Kelly and Jill end up on a women's prison farm in Louisiana. Actress Kim Basinger - in one of her first television roles - appears as an inmate.

2) "Consenting Adults" (Episode 10, Season 1 - December 8, 1976)
Farrah on a skateboard. Enough said.

3) "Angels on Wheels" (Episode 12, Season 1 - December 22, 1976)
Jill joins a roller derby team in order to investigate the mysterious death of a skating star. Actor Dick Sargent (Bewitched) guest stars as the team's owner.

4) "Angels in Paradise" (Episode 23, Season 2 - September 14, 1977)
This two-hour episode set in Hawaii introduces us to Jill's younger sister Kris (Cheryl Ladd), who becomes the newest Angel.

5) "Pretty Angels All in a Row" (Episode 25, Season 2 - September 28, 1977)
Kris and Kelly enter the Miss Chrysantheum beauty pageant to find out who is scaring away contestants.

6) "Circus of Terror" (Episode 27, Season 2 - October 19, 1977)
Kris becomes a knife thrower's assistant when the Angels join a circus to uncover who is behind a series of mysterious accidents.

7) "Angels in the Wings" (Episode 32, Season 2 - November 23, 1977)
Cheryl Ladd sings in this episode when Kris joins the cast of the film version of the musical, Sweet Misery, to learn who is trying to kill an actress. Actor Gene Barry, who later appeared on Broadway in La Cage aux Folles, guest stars.

8) "Angels in Springtime" (Episode 50, Season 3 - October 11, 1978)
The Angels visit the Springtime Spa to find out who electrocuted a famous actress in a hot tub. Academy Award-winning actress Mercedes McCambridge (All the King's Men, Giant) and Nancy Parsons (who later played Beulah Balbricker in the Porky's film series) guest star.

9) "Love Boat Angels" (Episode 69, Season 4 - September 12, 1979)
Shelley Hack joins the show as new Angel Tiffany Welles, and everyone comes aboard the Pacific Princess cruise ship to catch a thief (played by Bert Convy). The cast of The Love Boat - Gavin MacLeod, Bernie Kopell, Fred Grandy, Ted Lange and Lauren Tewes - also make an appearance in this two-hour episode.

10) "Toni's Boys" (Episode 91, Season 4 - April 2, 1980)
This episode is a pilot for a spin-off called Toni's Boys (which never became a series). Silver screen legend Barbara Stanwyck guest stars as Antonia "Toni" Blake, Charlie's friend who runs a detective agency featuring three handsome male detectives - Bob (Bob Seagren, who previously played Billy Crystal's lover on Soap), Cotton (Stephen Shortridge) and Matt (Bruce Bauer).

Wow, you're even gayer than I am! I cannot believe you featured Kim Basinger when everyone else in the world speaks of Mary Woronov whenever this episode is mentioned (or first lesbian crush for that matter) (wait, did Pinky Tuscadero come before or after this epi??). Enjoyed seeing your favorites from "Charlie's Angels", but all this really did was make me long for your top ten from "Soap". Any chance you'll get to that any time soon?

I wonder if Shelley Hack was not approached for the book or just declined to participate. Oh, and I do recall that Toni's Boys episode...fondly :-)

Hey, Anonymous, here is a link to my 2009 Top 10 Episodes of Soap - one of my all-time favorite shows.

Moviemag46, Ms. Hack is featured in the book as the author talked to her at a Hollywood Collector Show in 2009 - but it's not an interview like the others.

Wow, another one who loves "Angels in the Wings". I really liked how they kept flashing back to that crazy accident with Norma Freidrick (she actually resembled Kate Jackson alot). Most people on a popular Angels site spew hate at that episode.
