Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: The Carpenters Have Only Just Begun

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

Last week Petula Clark remained at the top with "Downtown", which received 22 votes out of the 144 cast. Carly Simon and Olivia Newton-John/ELO tied for fifth place, allowing them both to stay on the list. And this week they will be challenged by the Carpenters and their 1970 hit, "We've Only Just Begun".

1) "Downtown"/Petula Clark (Last Week #1, Week 40) - 15 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1964-65

2) "Last Dance"/Donna Summer (LW #3, W13) - 21 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1978

3) "Time After Time"/Cyndi Lauper (LW #5, W20) - 20 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1984

4) "Take a Chance on Me"/ABBA (LW #4, W15) - 18 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1978

5) "Nobody Does It Better"/Carly Simon (LW #2, W3) - #2 the week of October 22, 1977

5) "Xanadu"/Olivia Newton-John & ELO (W2) - #8 the week of October 18, 1980

7) "Baby Don't Go"/Sonny & Cher (DEBUT) - #8 the week of October 16, 1965

8) "Hot Fun in the Summertime"/Sly and the Family Stone (DEBUT) - #2 the week of October 18, 1969

9) "We've Only Just Begun"/Carpenters (DEBUT) - #5 the week of October 17, 1970

10) "Lucky Star"/Madonna (DEBUT) - #4 the week of October 20, 1984

Well, Marc, this week turned out to be really easy! The vote goes to Karen & Richard (this is a given), ABBA (also a given) and Carly (again, a given)! Was there anyone else on the list?!?

Have a groovy week, Marc! =)
