10 Groovy Things to Do in September starring Paul Rudd, Jake Gyllenhaal & Patti LuPone
Since there are so many groovy events, plays, musicals and concerts, I thought I would begin this new monthly feature in order to help promote a few of them (click on a title for more information or to purchase tickets):
1) If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet
Currently in previews. Opens September 20 - November 25 at NYC's Laura Pels Theatre
Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) makes his American stage debut in Nick Payne's new play about a drifter who develops a special bond with his overweight niece. Michael Longhurst directs this Off-Broadway production for the Roundabout Theatre Company.
2) Grace
Broadway previews begin September 13. Opens October 4 - January 6 at NYC's Cort Theatre
Ed Asner returns to Broadway after more than 20 years (he starred opposite Madeline Kahn in a 1989 production of Born Yesterday) to play an abrasive exterminator in Craig Wright's new play about a couple (Paul Rudd and Kate Arrington) who move to Florida to begin a new life and open a chain of Gospel-themed motels. Michael Shannon (from TV's Boardwalk Empire and Arrington's real-life partner) also stars.
3) Sweet Bird of Youth
September 14 - October 25 at Chicago's Goodman Theatre
Academy Award nominee Diane Lane (Unfaithful) and Broadway’s Finn Wittrock (Death of a Salesman) star in this revival of Tennessee Williams' 1959 drama about a faded Hollywood movie star and a young actor-turned-gigolo. The play is directed by David Cromer, who was previously scheduled to direct a 2011 Broadway production with Nicole Kidman and James Franco that never came to pass.
4) Patti LuPone
September 18 - 22 at NYC's 54 Below
Backed by a five-piece band, the Tony Award-winning actress will sing a mix of contemporary pop and Broadway tunes as well as a selection of Paris and Berlin cabaret classics from the 1930s and '40s.
5) The Paley Center & Warner Archive Collection Present The Retro Action-Adventure-Thon
September 21-22 in Los Angeles
The Paley Center for Media partners with Warner Archive Collection for a weekend of rare screenings, exhibits and onstage conversations celebrating a classically cool collection of some of TV’s greatest action-adventure heroes, including Man From Atlantis (1977-78) with Patrick Duffy, Tarzan (1966-68) with Ron Ely, and Shazam! (1974-76) with Michael Gray.
6) 26th Annual Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction
September 23 in NYC's Times Square, Shubert Alley and West 44th Street
Join Broadway Cares and thousands of other theatre fans as they find showbiz treasures, meet the stars and bid on once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Shows scheduled to have tables include Newsies, Once, Wicked and Evita, while the always-popular Celebrity Autograph Table & Photo Booth will feature such stars as Harvey Fierstein, Jeremy Jordan, Steve Kazee, Jan Maxwell, Bebe Neuwirth, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Bernadette Peters, Judy Kaye, Mario Cantone, Nick Adams and Rebecca Luker. Also, the Grand Auction lots now open for pre-bidding include lunch with the legendary Angela Lansbury and VIP visits to the sets of TV's Modern Family and Smash. This not-to-be-missed event is free and open to the public.
7) Sam Bendrix at the Bon Soir
September 24 - October 10 at San Diego's Martinis Above Fourth
Featuring the songs of Cole Porter, Kurt Weill and George Gershwin, this La Jolla Playhouse production of Keith Bunin's play stars actor Luke Macfarlane (TV's Brothers & Sisters) as a young gay singer in a Greenwich Village nightclub in 1958.
8) Valley of the Dolls Staged Reading Benefit
September 27 at Los Angeles' Sacred Fools Theater
This one night only staged reading of the infamous 1967 film is a benefit for Sean Abley's AIDS/Lifecycle 2013 fundraising efforts. The cast includes the fabulous Alexandra Billings as Helen Lawson, Drew Droege as Jennifer, Matt Valle as Anne, and Sam Pancake (from the web series, PRETTY) as Neely O'Hara!
9) Shaun Sperling & Moose present: Shaun's Gay-Bar-Mitzvah!
September 29 at Mary's Attic in Chicago
Last month I blogged about Mr. Sperling's video of his 1992 Madonna-themed bar mitzvah, which has received over a million views since it was posted on YouTube. Shaun has been on The Today Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and he will be appearing on Ellen in October. But for one night only the Chicago attorney will recreate his viral "Vogue" number at this special event, which will also feature "modern" takes on the traditional bar mitzvah format, rare Madonna prizes, and DJ Moose spinning Madonna and other dance hits from 1992 as well as the very best live concert footage and videos from the era.
10) I AM Love Campaign
September 29-30 at Chicago's Center on Halsted
The final stop on 108 Productions' Midwest Sneak Preview Tour includes a performance of Terrence McNally's controversial 1998 play, Corpus Christi (a retelling of the Jesus story with Jesus as a gay man living in Texas in the 1950s), and a screening of the new documentary, Corpus Christi: Playing with Redemption, about the touring production of the play. The campaign will also be presented in Madison, Wisconsin, on September 23, and in Dubuque, Iowa, on September 25-27.

I saw Jakey a few weeks ago and it was a very good play - I was close enough to she into his blue eyes and chest hair! Bonus - Jakey with british accent! He played a bit of a wanker who couldn't get over his last love/girlfriend. The show is 90 mins, has only the 4 actors and no intermission. There didn't look to be a bad seat in the house and all seats were $100.
Have ticket for "Sweet Bird of Youth" September 23rd. Looking real forward to this one!
Sean, sounds like you had a real nice Jakey experience. I'm jealous.
