Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: Extra! Extra! It's Barbra & Ryan in The Main Event

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

Last week Petula Clark reclaimed the top spot with "Downtown", which received 29 votes out of the 171 cast. And this week she will be challenged by the Monkees, Rita Coolidge and Barbra Streisand.

1) "Downtown"/Petula Clark (Last Week #2, W30) - 15 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1964-65

2) "Last Dance"/Donna Summer (LW #1, W3) - #3 the week of August 12, 1978

3) "Time After Time"/Cyndi Lauper (LW #4, W10) - 20 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1984

4) "Take a Chance on Me"/ABBA (LW #4, W5) - #41 the week of August 12, 1978

5) "Band of Gold"/Freda Payne (LW #3, W3) - #5 the week of August 8, 1970

6) "Blowin' in the Wind"/Peter, Paul & Mary (DEBUT) - #4 the week of August 8, 1963

7) "Pleasant Valley Sunday"/The Monkees (DEBUT) - #4 the week of August 12, 1967

8) "Mr. Big Stuff"/Jean Knight (DEBUT) - #4 the week of August 7, 1971

9) "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher"/Rita Coolidge (DEBUT) - #4 the week of August 13, 1977

10) "The Main Event/Fight"/Barbra Streisand (DEBUT) - #3 the week of August 11, 1979

Some hard choices this week since there were many that I liked but I went with Blowin' in the Wind-a song with a lot of meaning as well as being beautifully sung, Band of Gold and Pleasant Valley Sunday. Love Downtown but thought I'd give something else a chance and normally if Babs is one of the choices I'd pick whatever song she sang but the Main Event has to be one of the dumbest songs she or anyone else ever sung, much like the film it came from.

I'm going with the fab trio of Peter, Paul & Mary; Miss. Clark; and ABBA this week.

Joel, Babs' "Main Event" song is a guilty pleasure of mine. I can't help it. Of course, her and Ryan's first film collaboration - What's Up, Doc? - remains their best one by far.
