Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: The Beach Boys "Get Around"

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

After 17 weeks in the Top 10, we bid a fond farewell to Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" last week and welcomed back Petula Clark to the top spot with "Downtown", which received 29 votes out of the 179 cast. And this week she will be challenged by Paul Simon, The Hues Corporation and The Beach Boys.

1) "Downtown"/Petula Clark (Last Week #3, Week 25) - 15 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1964-65

2) "Rainy Days and Mondays"/Carpenters (W2) - #4 the week of July 3, 1971

3) "Time After Time"/Cyndi Lauper (LW #1, W5) - #7 the week of July 7, 1984

4) "Vogue"/Madonna (LW #1, W8) - 24 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1990

5) "I Wanna Dance with Somebody"/Whitney Houston (W2) - #1 the week of July 4, 1987

6) "I Get Around"/The Beach Boys (DEBUT) - #1 the week of July 4, 1964

7) "Spinning Wheel"/Blood, Sweat & Tears (DEBUT) - #2 the week of July 5, 1969

8) "Kodachrome"/Paul Simon (DEBUT) - #2 the week of July 7, 1973

9) "Rock the Boat"/The Hues Corporation (DEBUT) - #1 the week of July 6, 1974

10) "Baker Street"/Gerry Rafferty (DEBUT) - #2 the week of July 8, 1978

Wow a lot of great choices this week! For the first time since she's been on the list I didn't vote for Petula, opting for more instrumentally complex music, the fast and fun Kodachrome, the trumpet heavy Baker Street, and the terrific Spinning Wheel. Hated to leave off Rock the Boat and I Get Around such great upbeat summer songs.

For as much as I love The Beach Boys... I was forced to choose Miss. Clark, Cyndi, and (of course) Karen & Richard.

Happy Independence Day, Marc!! I hope the fireworks you create are safe & memorable!! =)

Hey, Joel, glad you liked all the new additions to the list this week.

And, Lance, thanks for sharing your selections as well - and I hope you had a fabulous 4th!
