Remembering Lupe Ontiveros 1942 - 2012
Actress Lupe Ontiveros, who died Thursday at age 69, first appeared on television as a maid in a 1976 episode of Charlie's Angels. She later played Dudley Moore's housekeeper on his short-lived 1993 sitcom, Dudley; the free-spirited matriarch of a Mexican-American family on 2002-03 series, Greetings from Tucson; and most recently the grandmother on the CBS sitcom, Rob. But I will always remember her as Gaby's mother-in-law, Juanita Solis, on Desperate Housewives, who was run over by an intoxicated Andrew Van de Kamp during the show's first season. For this performance, she received a 2005 Emmy nomination as Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
Ontiveros also appeared on Broadway in the 1979 play, Zoot Suit, and in its 1981 film adaptation. Her other movie credits include El Norte (1983), The Goonies (1985), Selena (1997), As Good as It Gets (1997), Real Women Have Curves (1992), Our Family Wedding (2010) and my personal favorite, Chuck & Buck (2000), for which she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award as Best Supporting Female.
Below you can watch a celebration of her work in a video made to commemorate her NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award as well as scenes from Desperate Housewives and Chuck & Buck.
