Remembering Andy Griffith 1926 - 2012
My father's favorite sitcom was The Andy Griffith Show so I grew up watching the actor, who died earlier today at age 86. Below I've selected some videos to celebrate his life and long career:
A Face in the Crowd was Griffith's 1957 film debut directed by Elia Kazan.
The actor was the Mystery Guest on the TV game show, What's My Line?, on April 26, 1959.
Griffith sings "The Fishin' Hole", the theme song of The Andy Griffith Show, which aired on CBS for 249 episodes from October 3, 1960 to April 1, 1968. He also appeared in the 1959 Broadway musical, Destry Rides Again, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
Here are the first episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and its spin-off series, Mayberry R.F.D. (1968-71), in which Andy Taylor marries Helen Crump. I was surprised to learn today that Griffith was never even nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance as Mayberry's sheriff.
The New Andy Griffith Show aired for 10 episodes on CBS in 1971. Griffith and his onscreen wife, Lee Meriwether, also appeared together in 1969's Angel in My Pocket, which was one of my favorite movies as a kid.
Matlock (1986-95) aired on NBC and ABC for 195 episodes.
The actor discusses The Andy Griffith Show during a 1998 interview for the Archive of American Television.
