Courtesy of SoapClassics, this week's Groovy Giveaway is two 2-DVD sets of The Bauer Family Story, featuring 11 classic episodes of the daytime soap opera, Guiding Light. I enjoyed watching this collection of memorable shows centered around Springfield's most beloved family, and below are the episodes that are included:
- Man of the Year (November 14, 1977)
Mike Bauer (Don Stewart) is honored with a surprise award while a mysterious man lurks in the shadows. This episode also stars the lovely Lenore Kasdorf as Rita Stapleton.
- Where in the World is Santo Domingo? (March 19, 1980)
When Ed Bauer's ex-wife, Holly (Maureen Garrett), is kidnapped by Roger Thorpe (played by the great Michael Zaslow), Ed and Mike travel to Santo Domingo to rescue her. This episode also stars John Wesley Shipp as Ed's godson, Kelly Nelson - and it features my favorite Guiding Light opening theme, which you can watch below.
- Courage (June 27, 1984)
Actress Charita Bauer shines in this moving episode, in which her character, matriarch Bert Bauer, and Josh Lewis (Robert Newman) both need physical therapy in order to walk again. This episode also stars Kim Zimmer as the fabulous Reva Shayne Lewis and Carrie Nye as real estate agent Susan Piper.
- The Return (November 22, 1996)
Aunt Meta Bauer (played by Search for Tomorrow's Mary Stuart) returns to Springfield after 20 years. This episode also stars the handsome Frank Grillo as Hart Jessup (in a pair of very tight jeans) and Days of our Lives' Josh Taylor as Quint Chamberlain. - Married to the Mob (February 16, 1999)
This tense episode features two memorable storylines - Michelle Bauer and Danny Santos' wedding and Holly's kidnapping of nine Springfield children. - Death of a Patriarch (February 27, 1973)
This half-hour episode centers around Papa Bauer's memorial service and includes the broadcast's original commercials.
- Unexpected Arrival (July 2, 1987)
No DVD set about the Bauer family would be complete without some episodes featuring the annual Bauer barbecue on the 4th of July, so five of them are included in this collection. And this episode stars One Life to Live's Kassie Wesley DePaiva in her first daytime soap role as Chelsea Reardon.
- Dueling Barbecues (July 4, 1994)
This episode stars Vincent Irizarry as Nick Spaulding, Marj Dusay as Alexandra Spaulding and Michael Zaslow as Roger Thorpe.
- Party Crasher (July 4, 1997)
The wonderful Cynthia Watros' performance is the highlight of this episode as her character, a bitter and drunk Annie Dutton, shows up at the Bauer barbecue and makes a scene. All My Children's Rebecca Budig also stars in her first daytime soap role as Michelle Bauer.
- America The Beautiful (July 4, 2002)
Springfield's residents come together at the Bauer barbecue to reflect on a post-9/11 world - and a shirtless Matt Bomer (TV's White Collar) appears as Ben Reade.
- One Last Time (July 3, 2009)
This final Bauer barbecue episode stars Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia as Olivia and Natalia, who face some drama in their relationship.
