Cinema Q II: A Free LGBT Film Series in Chicago

The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events - in association with the Queer Film Society, the Center on Halsted, Chicago Filmmakers (the presenting organization of Reeling: The Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival) and The Legacy Project - will be presenting Cinema Q II, the second annual free film series celebrating outstanding LGBT movies. The screenings will take place every Wednesday in March at 6:30 pm in the Chicago Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater (78 E. Washington), and they will all be followed by a discussion and Q&A.

And here are the films:

March 7: But I'm a Cheerleader
If you want to laugh, go see lesbian director Jamie Babbit’s hilarious 1999 satirical comedy about a controversial “ex-gay” camp for “confused” teenagers. Natasha Lyonne, Cathy Moriarty, RuPaul, Mink Stole, Michelle Williams and a hot and hunky Eddie Cibrian head the cast.

March 14: Blue Citrus Hearts
Out writer-director Morgan Jon Fox’s gritty coming-out, coming-of-age story of teenagers Sam and Julien won kudos on the fest circuit, including Best Feature when it screened at Reeling in 2003.

March 21: I Killed My Mother
I enjoyed this French Canadian dramedy when I saw it in 2010 (click here to read my review). It tells the story of a gay 16-year-old enfant terrible (played by out director Xavier Dolan) and his daily battles with his single mother.

March 28: Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
Out writer-director-producer Bennett Singer will attend this screening of his acclaimed 2003 documentary portrait of the openly gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin (in honor of the 100th anniversary of Rustin’s birth date). A complimentary dessert reception will follow in the G.A.R. Rotunda (courtesy of Ann Sather).
