Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: You've Got Mail, Carpenters

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

Last week Petula Clark claimed the top spot with her 1965 hit, "Downtown", which received 44 votes out of the 192 cast. And this week she will be challenged by Diana Ross, Hall & Oates and the Carpenters with two songs, including their 1975 tune, "Please Mr. Postman".

1) "Downtown"/Petula Clark (Week 2) - #1 the week of January 30, 1965

2) "The Sounds of Silence"/Simon & Garfunkel (LW #3, W5) - #12 the week of January 29, 1966

3) "You're So Vain"/Carly Simon (LW #1, W4) - #2 the week of January 27, 1973

4) "(They Long to Be) Close to You"/Carpenters (LW #2, W27) - 17 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970

5) "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves"/Cher (LW #4, W12) - 16 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1971-72

6) "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"/The Platters (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 24, 1959

7) "Please Mr. Postman"/Carpenters (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 25, 1975

8) "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)"/Diana Ross (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 24, 1976

9) "Car Wash"/Rose Royce (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 29, 1977

10) "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)"/Hall & Oates (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 30, 1982

Well, Marc... every now and again you throw in a really hard decision week. In the end, I had to vote for Karen & Richard (twice, of course!) and Carly. (Sorry, Miss. Clark.)

Bringing on Gwen and the Boys has thrown the queeniness of this contest onto a new level - so this week, it's The Carpenters (the long-serving one), Petula and "Car Wash" for me! Jx
