Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: Let's Do The Twist!

Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 50+ years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list.

The Carpenters remained in the Top 10 for a 25th week with their 1970 hit, "(They Long to Be) Close to You", which received 35 votes out of the 194 cast. And this week they will be challenged by the Bee Gees, The Bangles and Chubby Checker's dance tune, "The Twist", which originally reached #1 on the Billboard chart in September 1960 and then again in January 1962.

1) "(They Long to Be) Close to You"/Carpenters (Last Week #1, Week 25) - 17 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970

2) "The Sounds of Silence"/Simon & Garfunkel (LW #4, W3) - #2 the week of January 15, 1966

3) "You're So Vain"/Carly Simon (W2) - #1 the week of January 13, 1973

4) "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves"/Cher (LW #3, W10) - 16 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1971-72

5) "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"/Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer (LW #5, W7) - 15 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1979-80

6) "The Twist"/Chubby Checker (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 13, 1962

7) "My Sweet Lord"/George Harrison (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 16, 1971

8) "American Pie"/Don McLean (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 15, 1972

9) "Too Much Heaven"/Bee Gees (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 13, 1979

10) "Walk Like an Egyptian"/The Bangles (DEBUT) - #1 the week of January 10, 1987
