DVD Dish: The Complete 8th Season of All in the Family
The 8th season of the classic TV sitcom, All in the Family, was released on DVD earlier this month by Shout! Factory - and I consider it one of the best seasons of the series. It's also the last one worth watching, since both Sally Struthers and Rob Reiner left the show at the end of the season. Without Archie's little girl and her "Meathead" husband, the series just wasn't the same during its 9th and final year (and don't even mention Archie Bunker's Place, which did the unthinkable by killing off Edith with a stroke - such a horrible decision). But during its 8th season, All in the Family was still one of the best situation comedies on television. It won six Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Carroll O'Connor), Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Jean Stapleton), Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Reiner), and Writing in a Comedy Series (for the "Cousin Liz" episode). Two other equally great episodes were also nominated for their writing - "Edith's Crisis of Faith" and "Edith's 50th Birthday". If you're a Family fan like I am, then you must add this memorable season to your DVD collection (click here to order it on Amazon).
Now here are a few of my favorite episodes of All in the Family's 8th Season:

Groovy Music Monday: Live from Skokie, it's Linda Eder
Since the fabulous Linda Eder will be at Skokie's North Shore Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, February 12 (click here for tickets), I decided to feature her today. 31 Cold Days of Hot Guys #31: Daniel Robinson
This month I've been featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season - and my final Hot Guy is Daniel Robinson, who starred in the 2009 film, The Big Gay Musical. I was unable to choose between the two videos below of his performance at Broadway Bares Solo Strips at NYC's Splash Bar on January 31, 2010 - the first one is longer, but the second one has a sharper image and the heads of the audience aren't so obtrusive. And this way you can enjoy Daniel from two different angles.

Web Series Worth Watching, Part Two: Joan Van Ark is a Pretty Guest Star
The Season Finale of Pretty shares the title of Web Series of the Week with the delightful comedy duo of Stiller & Meara (you can read all about them in Part One). The lovely Joan Van Ark - whom we all adored as Valene on TV's Knots Landing - makes a Pretty amusing guest appearance as the series ends its second hilarious season. To watch Pretty from the beginning, go to the show's website at www.prettytheseries.com or subscribe to its YouTube channel. You can also become a fan on Facebook.
Web Series Worth Watching, Part One: Stiller & Meara
I love Stiller & Meara - aka Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, the husband-and-wife comedy team who have been performing together since the 1960s. You may also remember them for their television roles - Stiller played George Constanza's father Frank on Seinfeld and Arthur on The King of Queens, while Meara appeared on Rhoda as Ms. Morgenstern's stewardess friend Sally and on Sex and the City as Miranda's mother-in-law Mary. And they are the parents of actor Ben Stiller, who is one of the producers of their new Yahoo web series, in which the delightful duo discuss such topics as Facebook, Lady Gaga, marijuana, Justin Bieber and Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Below are five of my favorite episodes, and to watch more, click here.

RuPaul's Drag Race #1: Have a Very Mimi Christmas
Start your engines, ladies - and they're off! Yes, folks, it's that special time of year once again when a bunch of fabulous drag queens come together to outbitch each other for $75,000. And for that kind of cash, maybe I should consider donning a dress and lip-syncing for my life. Then again, maybe not - I would probably end up in a puddle of tears like poor Mimi did this week on the third season debut of RuPaul's Drag Race, which introduced us to 12 new contestants and one surprise return (I'm not sure why Shangela was brought back from Season 2 - so far she hasn't impressed anyone). And after watching the episode as well as the behind-the-scenes Casting Extravaganza and the ultra-bitchy Untucked extra, I thought it would be fun to list my favorites - and least favorites - each week here on the Dish. But you better fasten your seatbelt because I have a feeling it is going to be one helluva bumpy ride.
This week Drag Race celebrated the holidays by having the gals get their picture taken for a Christmas card while jumping on a trampoline - which was quite challenging for the plus-size girls (I felt sorry for them). Then they had to design a festive holiday outfit using thrift store purchases and some Christmas decorations. The first gal to sashay away was Venus D-Lite, whom I didn't care much for when I reviewed her preview video back in November. After her holiday outfit failed to impress any of the judges, she was forced to lip-sync for her life against the other bottom contestant - so to speak - Shangela. These two queens spent more time destroying each other's costumes than singing, and Venus was given the heave-ho at the bitter end. Maybe she should have had more plastic surgery to look like Madonna.
Now here are the remaining 12 contestants in order of my preference:

Deeper Dish with Rondi Reed
In September 1987 I saw my very first play in Chicago - Little Egypt, a comedy by Lynn Siefert that was produced by Steppenwolf Theatre Company. It was about six quirky characters living in a small Midwestern town, and one of them was played by actress Rondi Reed, who has been a member of Steppenwolf's talented ensemble since 1979. She was wonderful in the show, and since then I've had the great pleasure of seeing her in many other plays, including The Grapes of Wrath (1988), Stepping Out (1988), The Secret Rapture (1990), The Rise and Fall of Little Voice (1993), Pot Mom (1998) and August: Osage County (2007), for which she deservedly won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.
Rondi also originated the role of Madame Morrible in the Chicago production of the musical, Wicked, in 2005 - a part she later played on Broadway as well - and her television and film credits include Roseanne (1992), Born Yesterday (1993), Wild Palms (1993), the 100th episode of Seinfeld (1995's "The Kiss Hello"), A Streetcar Named Desire (1995), Fargo (a 2003 TV pilot based on the movie) and You Don't Know Jack (2010). Her most recent role is on the hit CBS sitcom, Mike & Molly, as Mike's mother Peggy. I am so delighted to have the fabulous Ms. Reed here on the Dish to discuss her career and answer a few pop culture questions.

This month I'm featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.
Today's Hot Guy is actor Jon-Erik Hexum in the campy TV movie, Making of a Male Model, which aired on ABC on October 9. 1983. The film stars Joan Collins as a modeling agent who meets a hunky, young ranch hand (Hexum) and invites him to move to New York and pursue a modeling career. The movie was a breakthrough role for Hexum, who became a major sex symbol until his accidental death in 1984.

The 25 Grooviest Movie Stars of the 1930s
Last year I posted my 25 favorite films of every decade from the 1930s to the 2000s in honor of the Oscars. I thought it would be fun to do something similar this year, so between now and February 27 (the date of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards), I will be sharing my 25 favorite movie stars of every decade, beginning today with the 1930s (in order of preference):
1) Katharine Hepburn
Oscars: Best Actress for Morning Glory (1933)
Oscar Nominations: Best Actress for Alice Adams (1935)
Other Movies: Stage Door (1937), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Holiday (1938)
2) Cary Grant
Movies: Topper (1937), The Awful Truth (1937), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Holiday (1938)
And the Oscar goes to . . .
The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced this morning, and there were a few pleasant surprises and unfortunate snubs:
- Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams has certainly come a long way since her Dawson's Creek days - but she was the best actor on that show.
- Best Actor nominee Javier Bardem should be thanking his friend Julia Roberts, who held a screening of Biutiful for industry heavyweights earlier this month.
- It's a shame that Julianne Moore's wonderful performance in The Kids Are All Right was overlooked - but at least Mark Ruffalo was deservedly nominated.
- No Best Song nomination for Burlesque? Boo!
- I thought for sure that I Am Love would receive a Best Foreign Language Film nomination.
- Movie that the Oscar nominations make me want to see: Winter's Bone
- Movie that the Oscar nominations do not make me want to see: True Grit (I'm no fan of westerns, but I just don't understand why the original 1969 film starring John Wayne, Kim Darby and Glen Campbell had to be remade)
- At least The Tourist did not receive any nominations.

This month I'm featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.
Today's video is I Want Your Love, an independent short film by San Francisco filmmaker Travis Mathews about two gay friends (played by Jesse Metzger and Brenden Gregory) who sleep together. I'd read that it was sexually explicit so, of course, I was curious - especially since neither of the talented leads are your typical gay porn actors. The movie reminds me of John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus (2006), which also shows unsimulated sex - and Mathews is turning this 14-minute preview into a full-length feature, which begins filming next month. I've never posted anything as graphic as this before - but don't expect to see a clip from Pizza Boy Gangbang in the near future. I've also included below an interview with Mathews and his two actors. For more information, go to www.iwantyourlovethemovie.com.

Chicago Theater: Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 Birthday Party
The one and only Dolly Parton was in Chicago last night for the opening of 9 to 5, the touring production of her 2009 Broadway musical. And Governor Pat Quinn even showed up before the performance to proclaim January 19th as Dolly Parton Day in Illinois. She then came out to accept his sweet proclamation and introduce the show - and the audience sang "Happy Birthday" in honor of her 65th birthday (apparently blogger Michael Lehet of What's a Boy To Do began this tuneful tribute to her - and I thank him for that). And after their final bows, the cast presented Dolly with a birthday cake - and, of course, we had to serenade her again. I'm so glad I was able to attend Dolly's birthday party, and you can check out two different videos below of the onstage celebration (from Lehet and Chicago Theater Blog).

In honor of actress Betty White's 89th birthday yesterday, this week's theme is all about Sue Ann Nivens, the character she played on The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1973 to 1977:
1) What was the name of Sue Ann's TV show?
2) Whose husband did Sue Ann have an affair with in 1973?
3) Who was the one man Sue Ann most wanted to sleep with (and eventually did)?

In honor of actress Betty White's 89th birthday yesterday, this week's theme is all about Sue Ann Nivens, the character she played on The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1973 to 1977:
1) What was the name of Sue Ann's TV show?
2) Whose husband did Sue Ann have an affair with in 1973?
3) Who was the one man Sue Ann most wanted to sleep with (and eventually did)?
4) What kind of bed did Sue Ann have? And what was above her bed?
5) What did Sue Ann tease Murray Slaughter about?

31 Cold Days of Hot Guys #18: The Wild Wild Robert Conrad
This month I'm featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.
Today's Hot Guy is actor Robert Conrad, who starred on TV's The Wild Wild West from 1965 to 1969. The guy certainly had one of the best pair of buns in television history as his tight pants always accentuated his amazing ass. And we mustn't forget his hairy chest, which was often on display for us to drool over. Below you can watch him in glorious black-and-white as well as in color - and be sure to notice in the latter clip when his pants suddenly rip in the crotch and then are magically repaired.

The Golden Globes: The Good, the Bad & the Gleeful
I recently read an interview with comedian/actor Ricky Gervais, who hosted last night's 68th Annual Golden Globes for the second year in a row, and he said the following:
"I don't think I went far enough [last year]. Obviously not, because they invited me back. So, I'm going to do it again, do a proper job. And I guarantee they will not invite me back."
Well, Ricky, I think you will get your wish - especially after the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association made a nasty crack about your own less-than-stellar film career. It didn't seem like many folks in attendance were enjoying Gervais' sense of humor. A few of his jokes were funny, but when you begin the night with some tired Charlie Sheen jab, you know you're in trouble. The audience didn't laugh when he made fun of the film, The Tourist - whose nominations were already a joke - and everyone gasped when he ridiculed closeted gay Scientologist actors (whom I don't believe showed up for all the fun). However, when Gervais made an asinine remark about no one wanting to see Cher perform since 1975, I was ready for him to shut up and get on with the show - which I will now do myself. So here are the winners (my winning predictions are in pink) as well as some of my own personal awards:

31 Cold Days of Hot Guys #17: Kitchendales, Part 2
This month I'm featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.
I couldn't resist featuring another scene from Kitchendales, a 2000 French movie starring Dustin Dennard, Frederick Malahieude and Aurélien Wiik. In case you're wondering what is going on in the video, the three dirty men take a shower after cleaning the house. Then the "clumsy" woman hits herself in the face with a pie to get dirty as well, and they invite her to join them. Lucky lady!

Remembering Susannah York 1939 - 2011
I was especially saddened to learn of Susannah York's death yesterday at age 72 because I'm currently watching her in a wonderful 1982 British television series, We'll Meet Again, which I highly recommend. The lovely and talented actress also starred in such films as Tom Jones (1963), Kaleidoscope (1966), A Man for All Seasons (1966), Sebastian (1968), The Killing of Sister George (1968), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) - for which she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar and Golden Globe, Happy Birthday, Wanda June (1971), X, Y and Zee (1972), Robert Altman's Images (1972), and The Maids (1974). York also played Superman's mother Lara in Superman (1978) and its sequels, Superman II (1980) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) - and she even took a cruise on TV's The Love Boat in 1985.

This month I'm featuring a different video every day to warm us all up during this cold winter season.
Today's video is a scene from Kitchendales, a 2000 French movie starring an American hunk named Dustin Dennard. This film appears to be about three gorgeous guys on a cooking show, which I definitely think should be a new series on the Food Network.
