Top 10 Tuesday of Groovy Tunes: Ode to Bobbie Gentry
Each week I feature 10 groovy tunes that reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart during the last 51 years. You can vote for your three favorites, and the five with the most votes move on to the following week when five new songs will be added to the list. This week everyone who votes AND leaves a comment, listing their three favorite songs (as well as their name and email address), will be entered into today's Groovy Gay Giveaway to win a DVD of the film, Blackmail Boys (click here for more information).
After seven weeks in the Top 10, we bid a fond farewell to "Every Breath You Take" by The Police and welcome newcomer Bobbie Gentry and her 1967 hit, "Ode to Billie Joe". Meanwhile, the Carpenters remain at the top, having received 29 votes out of the 138 cast last week. Now here is this week's Top 10 Tuesday, and you can vote for your favorites in the poll below.
1) "(They Long to Be) Close to You"/Carpenters (Last Week #1, W7) - #5 the week of September 5, 1970
2) "Papa Don't Preach"/Madonna (LW #4, W3) - #3 the week of August 30, 1986
3) "Magic"/Olivia Newton-John (LW #3, W5) - #3 the week of August 30, 1980
4) "Bette Davis Eyes"/Kim Carnes (LW #2, W8) - #78 the week of September 5, 1981

Some tough choices this week. The Carpenters were easy but I had to ditch my previous loyalty to Magic for Ode to Billy Joe, a great story song and was torn between Abracadabra and Sweet Dreams since I have always been a fan of both but I ended up picking Sweet Dreams. So Close to You, Ode to Billy Joe & Sweet Dreams were my three.

no one does it better than Karen Carpenter. Still stands the test of time.
I'm sorry to see Every Breath You Take leave the top 10. My picks from this week's list are Papa Don't Preach, What's Love Got To Do With It, and Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). I remember watching those music videos on MTV back in the early days.

Goodness, Marc... this was almost as difficult as some of the Celebrity Birthday Dinners! In the end, I came up with:
1. Karen & Richard (naturally!)
2. The Angels
3. Eurythmics
Have a groovy week, Marc!
There was some I was upset not to see on the list like my all time favorite, The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia. However Olivia was the one obvious choice for me.

Thanks for all your comments, guys!
DAP, I agree that no one does it better than Karen Carpenter.
Lance, I'm happy to hear that it was difficult to choose. :)
Patrick, check back in April for "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". That's when it might be featured on the Top 10 list since it hit #1 in April 1973.
