Have a 'Poseidon Adventure' on New Year's Eve
If you're still wondering what to do tonight - and you live in or around Chicago - I recommend that you check out Camp Midnight's third annual screening of the 1972 disaster flick, The Poseidon Adventure, at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave.). The fun begins at 11 pm with a pre-show hosted by your Captain, Dick O'Day, and his hearty crew from Hell in a Handbag Productions, who will preside over a costume contest (1970s cruise wear is suggested). An audience interactive guide and running commentary will be provided during the film - and the screening will be timed so that theater patrons and their celluloid counterparts will celebrate midnight at the exact same moment.
Tickets are $27, which includes a complimentary champagne toast, a drink ticket and party favors. To purchase tickets, click here.
And since this is my final Dish of 2010, I want to thank my fabulous readers for their kind words, support and friendship - and wish you all a groovy new year!
The Grooviest Television of 2010
I pretty much watched the same shows in 2010 that I did in 2009. I finally discovered the wonderful Nurse Jackie on DVD, but I didn't get to see either the critically-acclaimed Boardwalk Empire or The Walking Dead (hopefully I will in 2011). So here are my choices in order of preference:
11) True Blood: I adore hunky werewolves - especially when they look like actor Joe Manganiello (see photo).

The Grooviest Theater of 2010
Although I didn't make it to New York this year to see some Broadway shows, there were plenty of outstanding musicals, plays and performances in Chicago to keep me entertained. Now here are my theatrical favorites of 2010 in order of preference (click on a title to read my complete review):
Jerry's Girls: Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury & Chita Rivera
I'm posting the following videos for my partner, who LOVES Jerry Herman. The Broadway composer of such marvelous musicals as Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles (and I adore the score to Mack & Mabel) received a Kennedy Center Honor on December 5, and the show was broadcast on Tuesday with performances by Kelsey Grammer, Matthew Morrison, Christine Baranski, Christine Ebersole, Laura Benanti, Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara and Matthew Bomer (who knew this gorgeous guy could sing!). However, the main event for me was seeing three Broadway legends on stage together - Carol Channing, Angela Lansbury and Chita Rivera - who are featured in a video below, rehearsing backstage before the tribute.

Remembering Jacqueline Courtney 1946 - 2010
Actress Jacqueline Courtney, who died on December 20 at age 64, was one of daytime television's most popular stars from the late 1960s to the early '80s. She is best remembered for two soap opera roles - Alice Matthews Frame on Another World and Pat Ashley Kendall Lord on One Life to Live.
Courtney began playing Alice on Another World's first episode in 1964, but it wasn't until 1968 when actor George Reinholt joined the cast as wealthy businessman Steve Frame that she became part of one of daytime TV's most memorable love triangles. Alice and Steve fell in love, but a scheming Rachel (played by Robin Strasser) - who was married to Alice's brother - wanted Mr. Frame for herself. She soon seduced him, and on the night of Alice and Steve's engagement party, Rachel informed Alice that she was carrying her fiance's baby. The drama continued for this trio until both Courtney and Reinholt were fired from the show in 1975 due to personality clashes with head writer Harding Lemay and executive producer Paul Rauch.
The couple quickly found new roles on One Life to Live as Pat Ashley and Tony Lord, who was secretly the father of Pat's young son. Their onscreen romance lasted until 1977 when Reinholt left the show. Courtney later played Pat's insanely jealous twin sister, Maggie Ashley, who locked Pat in the basement in order to pose as her and date Pat's boyfriend, Clint Buchanan (Pat eventually killed Maggie and got her life back). After her OLTL contract wasn't renewed in 1983, Courtney returned to Another World to resume her old role as Alice from 1984 to 1985 and briefly in 1989. The actress also appeared on the daytime soap, Loving, in 1987 as Diane Winston, the madam of a fancy bordello.

The Grooviest Web Series of 2010
It was a great year for web series, and I've enjoyed featuring so many of them here on the Dish. However, instead of simply listing my favorites, I thought it would be fun to do something a little different in this category, so here are my web series awards for 2010 (click on a show's title for more information):

The Grooviest Music of 2010
Anyone who reads Deep Dish on a regular basis knows that I'm not much into current Top 40 music. And in 2010 I bought very few CDs and downloaded hardly any music. However, I was fortunate enough to see many talented singers in concert this year. So here are my favorite music experiences of 2010 in order of preference (click on a name to read a review or interview):

Web Series Worth Watching: Brendan Bradley on The Temp Life
Web Series of the Week: The Temp Life
For my final Web Series Worth Watching of 2010, I'm selecting the latest episode of The Temp Life as my favorite this week. Craig Bierko (and his wild hair) returns as Eddie, Nick's stepbrother and boss who gets chummy with Alina, while Nick hires a few new temps, including one played by the handsome Brendan Bradley, who starred in the 2009 gay romantic drama, Redwoods (that's him in the above pic). Please send your answers for this week's questions to deepdishdrama@aol.com or via a private Facebook message (DO NOT post your answers on here where everyone can see them or they will be deleted).
For the last Tuesday Trivia of 2010 (it will return on January 4), here are a few questions about the 2003 holiday classic, Bad Santa:
1) Who plays Granny? And what character did she play on TV from 1970 to 1977?
2) How are Marcus and Lois related?
3) Who plays Bob Chipeska? And on what 1977-84 TV sitcom did he star?
4) What is Thurman's last name?
5) What Christmas present does Thurman give Willie?

Web Series Worth Watching: 'In Between Men' (and their hot drama)
Web Series of the Week: In Between Men
Below is the second episode of the gay dramedy, which is a cross between Queer As Folk and Sex and the City. So far I'm enjoying it - especially the adorable Nick Mathews, who plays Dalton, the Carrie Bradshaw of the series (he's even got his own Italian "Mr. Big"). However, I'm not too keen on Dr. Dane's taste in men - the cute doc deserves much better. Here's hoping he finds someone more worthy of his kisses when new episodes resume after the holidays.

Chicago Theater: 'Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer' is naughty and nice (and very funny)
Hello, my name is Marc, and I was a Rudolph virgin.
Yes, it's true. Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer, David Cerda and Hell in a Handbag Productions' hilarious parody of the 1964 Christmas TV special, is celebrating its 13th year here in Chicago - and I finally got "red-hosed" for the first time last night to see what everyone has been raving about. Cerda's fabulous adaptation - with direction by Derek Czaplewski - is 90 minutes of catchy tunes, terrific performances and marvelous costumes (by the talented Kate Setzer Kamphausen). I would hope that everyone reading this is familiar with the original Rankin/Bass stop motion animated special, which has been telecast every holiday season for 47 consecutive years. So instead of rehashing the entire storyline, here are a few of my favorite moments in the Red-Hosed version:

Remembering Blake Edwards 1922 - 2010
Blake Edwards, who died Wednesday at age 88, was one of my favorite film directors - especially when I was growing up. His movies often made me laugh out loud - and, of course, the final scene of Breakfast at Tiffany's still gets me a bit verklempt. So to celebrate the life of Blake Edwards, here are my 11 favorite films of his (in chronological order):
Happy Holidays from Bing and Bowie (and Will and John)
I love this video of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reenacting Bing Crosby and David Bowie's classic holiday duet of "Peace on Earth" and "Little Drummer Boy". It was originally recorded on September 11, 1977, for Crosby's final TV Christmas special, Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas, which aired on November 30, 1977, on CBS (the singer died on October 14, 1977, at age 74).

10 groovy things I learned from John Waters last night
From the moment I walked in to Chicago's Harris Theater last night and heard the lyric, "Here comes Fatty with his sack of shit" (from Rudolph and Gang's heartwarming holiday classic, "Here Comes Fatty Claus"), I knew it was going to be a fabulous evening. As the sold-out audience of young and old and gay and straight folks found their seats, a few more groovy tunes from the 2004 CD, A John Waters Christmas, were played for our listening pleasure, including Alvin and the Chipmunks' "Sleigh Ride" and "Santa Claus is a Black Man" by AKIM and the Teddy Vann Production Company. After the lights finally dimmed, the director of such films as Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble and the original Hairspray appeared in a bright red velvet suit - and for the next 90 minutes he regaled us with a long list of what bizarre gifts he would like to give and receive for Christmas as well as engaging in some Q&A with his adoring public. Waters' kitschy, campy and delightfully raunchy one-man show was the first presentation of the Harris Theater's "Boys of Broadway" series, which will also feature a solo cabaret performance by Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming next May. And since I learned so many interesting things from the filmmaker, I thought I would share a few of them with you:

1) From what radio show does Ralphie receive a Secret Society decoder pin?
2) When Ralphie utters the dreaded "Queen Mother of Dirty Words", what other word does he say on camera (in order for the movie to keep its PG rating)?
3) Triple Question: What "major award" does Ralphie's father receive for winning a contest? What is it shaped like? And who breaks it?
4) What present does Ralphie receive from his Aunt Clara?
5) What is the name of the Lone Ranger's nephew's horse whom Ralphie's mother correctly identifies?

Web Series Worth Watching: Meryl Streep on Web Therapy
Web Series of the Week: Web Therapy
Created by actress Lisa Kudrow, her producing partner Dan Bucatinsky and writer-director Don Roos, this hilarious web series has been online for three seasons and will debut on Showtime in 2011. Kudrow is wonderful as Fiona Wallice, a therapist who treats people via web cam, and her special guest star in the most recent episodes is the brilliant Meryl Streep as sexual orientation therapist Camilla Bowner, who is trying to straighten out Fiona's gay husband Kip. I could listen to these two lovely ladies chat forever. Below are the first two shows featuring Streep - and to watch previous episodes, go to www.lstudio.com/web-therapy. Happy 50th, Coronation Street!
Anyone who reads this blog knows that I love soap operas - and one of the best is a British series by the name of Coronation Street, which first began airing 50 years ago today. That is a lot of delicious drama that deserves to be celebrated, so I've posted some clips below to honor the show.
Here is the entire first episode, which originally aired on December 9, 1960, and introduced us to such memorable characters as Ena Sharples, Elsie Tanner and, of course, Ken Barlow (played by William Roache, who is still on the show today at age 78 - that's him in the photo with Anne Kirkbride, who began playing Deirdre Barlow in 1972).

Groovy Music: Celebrate the Holidays in Rob Dorn's 'Wonderland'
Whenever I would visit my grandparents as a young boy, I would always watch Garfield Goose and Friends, a children's television program produced by Chicago's WGN-TV from 1955 to 1976. The host of the show was a friendly guy named Frazier Thomas, who was the only one who could understand what Garfield and all his other puppet friends were trying to "say". So it is so nice that actor/singer Rob Dorn is paying tribute to these wonderful icons of my childhood in his holiday concert, Rob Dorn: Wonderland, in which he will share his own memories of growing up in Chicago and watching such great "Wonderland-esque" TV specials as Cinderella (the 1965 version starring Lesley Ann Warren, Ginger Rogers and Celeste Holm) and, of course, the annual telecast of The Wizard of Oz. Rob will also be crooning a few tunes from his holiday CD, Wonderland, including "Holly Jolly Christmas", "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and "Winter Wonderland".

Of 'Glee' I Sing: Baby, It's Warm In Here . . .
. . . especially whenever Darren Criss opens his pretty mouth to croon a tune. Yes, I confess - I have a little crush on the guy. He's just so damn cute - and when he sings, be still my heart. Okay, that's enough drooling for one post. Moving on to last night's Christmas show, which fondly reminded me of an old Andy Williams holiday special. It was almost perfect - but not quite, which I will explain below in my review of Glee's 32nd episode, "A Very Glee Christmas":

Deeper Dish with Lucie Arnaz
I loved Lucille Ball as a kid. I watched her TV sitcom, Here's Lucy, every Monday night after my dad's favorite show, Gunsmoke. Her character, Lucy Carter, had two children - Kim and Craig - who were played by her real-life daughter and son, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr. And that is when I first became a fan of Ms. Arnaz, who was on the series for its entire six-year run (1968-74). She went on to star in many made-for-television movies, including Who Is the Black Dahlia? (1975), Death Scream (1975), and The Mating Season (opposite her husband, Laurence Luckinbill, whom she married in 1980). Lucie also appeared in two TV series of her own, The Lucie Arnaz Show (1985) and Sons and Daughters (1991), as well as the 1980 feature film, The Jazz Singer (opposite Neil Diamond), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Lucie has also achieved great success on the stage over the years, playing the lead role of Gittel Mosca in the 1974 national tour of the musical, Seesaw, and creating the role of Kathy in the 1976 West Coast Premiere of the play, Vanities (opposite Stockard Channing and Sandy Duncan). She later made her Broadway debut in the 1979 musical, They're Playing Our Song, for which she won a Theatre World Award and earned a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Her other Broadway credits include Lost in Yonkers (1992) and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (2006). However, the show that I most would have liked to have seen her in is the 2000 London production of the musical, The Witches of Eastwick, in which she sang the showstopper, "Another Night at Darryl's" (I highly recommend the cast recording).
And, finally, the talented actress and singer released her second solo CD earlier this year entitled Latin Roots, in which she celebrates her musical heritage by singing the Latin classics of her father, Desi Arnaz ("El Cumbanchero", which you can watch her perform below, and, of course, "Babalu"), as well as "The Music In Your Heart", a song written with her musician-composer son, Joe Luckinbill, and his godmother, Grammy-winning artist Madeline Stone. I couldn't be more delighted to have the lovely Lucie Arnaz here on the Dish to discuss her career and answer a few pop culture questions.

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be 'A Wonderful Life'
Every Tuesday I post five trivia questions relating to television, film or theater, and the first person who sends me the correct answers wins the highly coveted Auntie Mame Award.
Please send your answers for this week's questions to deepdishdrama@aol.com or via a private Facebook message (DO NOT post your answers on here where everyone can see them or they will be deleted).
To celebrate the most wonderful time of the year, I will be featuring holiday movies and TV specials for the next few weeks. This week's theme is the 1946 film, It's a Wonderful Life:
1) What is the name of George's younger brother?
2) Triple Question: Who does George marry? What actress plays her? And on what TV series did she appear in 1984-85?
3) What is the name of George's hometown? And what is it called in Clarence's alternate reality?
4) What are the first names of George's two friends (one is a cop and the other is a taxi driver)?
5) What happens every time a bell rings?
