Let's Get Lost: Some people are meant to be together

I'm a big Jin and Sun fan - maybe because I'm a hopeful romantic who believes that there is somebody special out there for each and every one of us. I can't help it - I'm just a sucker for love. And for all the bizarre sci-fi shenanigans going on on Lost, it's still the various love connections between the characters that capture my interest - and my heart - the most. Jin and Sun's complicated relationship has been one of the show's best love stories, and actors Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim make a very attractive and appealing couple with fabulous onscreen chemistry. So last night's Jin/Sun-centric episode was a total delight from start to finish - even though the Kwons have still not found their way back into each other's arms.

So let's begin with Jin and Sun and take a closer look at what happened to them this week:

On the island, MIB Locke told Jin that all the people whose names were on the cave wall had to go together in order for them to leave the island. But Jin wasn't really interested because he just wanted to find his wife. Unfortunately, everyone in their group was then shot with a drugged dart by Charles Widmore's cronies, and Zoe (Sheila Kelly from TV's Sisters) and Jane Curtin's son Chip from Kate & Allie (Frederick Koehler) took Jin back to their island to help them with Dharma Initiative stuff. Widmore then gave Jin Sun's digital camera with photos of their young daughter, which made Jin a little verklempt (it was a very emotional moment). He also informed Jin that everyone would cease to exist if MIB Locke ever left the island and that he was there to make sure that didn't happen.

Meanwhile, Sun wasn't much interested in listening to anyone either as Jack tried to talk to her about Jacob's lighthouse. MIB Locke then appeared to a startled Sun while she was gardening and told her that Jin was with his people. She didn't believe him and ran away. Locke then chased her through the jungle until she smacked her head on a tree branch, causing her to lose the ability to speak English. Later, Jack gave her a pad to write on and told her that he would help her find Jin - what a sweet guy that Dr. Shephard is.

And in the Parallel Time storyline, we returned to the airport, where Jin's $25,000 was confiscated by officials. He was supposed to deliver the cash and a watch to Martin Keamy (who was shot by Sayid in that character's PT story earlier this season). Also, we learned that Jin and Sun are not married - but they are sleeping together (I really liked Sun's blouse-unbuttoning seduction of Jin). And we got to see Jin shirtless, which is always an added treat. The evil Mr. Keamy then showed up at the hotel, interrupting the couple's afterglow and making a rude remark about being in a Godzilla movie when he was unable to understand their conversation. His henchman then went with Sun to a bank to get $25,000 out of her private account, while he took Jin to the restaurant, where he tied up the man. Apparently Keamy had informed Sun's father about her secret affair with Jin, which pissed him off - and now Keamy was supposed to kill Jin. I found Keamy's words to Jin that "some people aren't meant to be together" rather ominous - but judging from next week's previews in which Sun and Jin are embracing, I'm hoping that the couple will finally be reunited. Anyway, Sayid shot Keamy offscreen and then gave Jin a box cutter to free himself. Jin ended up shooting Keamy's henchman, who arrived at the restaurant with Sun after they learned that her father had closed her bank account. Poor Sun was also shot, and she revealed to Jin that she was pregnant. Will they meet up with Dr. Shephard at the hospital? That's my prediction.

Here is what happened with a few other characters:

MIB John Locke: He wasn't too pleased when Widmore's people took Jin since he needed him in order to leave the island. Locke later confronted Widmore, who lied that he knew nothing about Jin. Locke then informed him that "war" was coming to the island. So is Widmore a good guy or a bad guy? I'm still not sure.

Kate Austen and Claire Littleton: Locke informed a curious Claire that neither her nor Kate's name was on the cave wall and that he was only keeping Kate around to help him get all the candidates on the plane. After this task was accomplished, then "whatever happens, happens" he ominously said in reference to Kate. Does this mean that he doesn't care if Kate lives or dies? And will Claire see this as a perfect opportunity to kill Kate in order to reclaim her son? I don't know if I like all these ominous words that are being floated out there to scare us into thinking the worst. I have a feeling a few more folks are going to bite the dust before the series ends.

Richard Alpert: He returned to Ilana and Jack's group with Hurley and told them all that he was going to destroy the plane that MIB Locke was planning to use to leave the island.

The episode ended with Sayid swimming in the water to spy on Widmore and his group for MIB Locke. And we finally learned the identity of "The Package", a mysterious person who was being kept drugged up in a locked room aboard Widmore's submarine - it's Desmond Hume (who's married to Widmore's daughter Penny - and together they make another wonderful Lost couple) - and next week's episode will be all about him. Now that's something to look forward to. Until then, get lost.

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be The Unsinkable Molly Brown

Every Tuesday I post five questions relating to television or film, and the first person who sends me the correct answers wins the highly coveted Auntie Mame Award (for excellence in trivia).

Please send your answers for this week's questions to deepdishdrama@aol.com or via a private Facebook message at www.facebook.com/marcharshbarger (DO NOT post your answers on here where everyone can see them or they will be deleted).

In honor of Debbie Reynold's 78th birthday on Thursday, this week's theme is her 1964 film, The Unsinkable Molly Brown (for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress):

1) Who plays Molly's husband, Johnny Brown?

2) In what state do Molly and Johnny live for most of the film?

3) What famous ship does Molly sail on?

4) Complete this song title: "Belly Up to the ______, Boys"

5) Who played Molly in the original 1960 Broadway production?

Last week we had a tie - both Jake Epstine and Steve Aldridge answered the following questions correctly about the 1945 film, Mildred Pierce (and I must thank Steve for reminding me that Mildred becomes a waitress before she is officially divorced from her first husband):

1) What are the names of Mildred's two daughters? Veda and Kay

2) Who plays Mildred's friend, Ida? Eve Arden

3) Who plays Lottie the maid? Butterfly McQueen

4) What does Mildred do for a living right after she separates from her first husband? She's a waitress

5) Who shoots and kills Mildred's second husband, Monte? Veda

Deeper Dish with Carol Channing

Last week I had the great pleasure to chat with the legendary Carol Channing and her husband, Harry Kullijian.  It was a conversation that I will treasure forever.  She's 89, he's 90, and together they make an adorable couple.  Carol even sang a few bars here and there, and she is a delightful mimic as she offered up fabulous impressions of Julie Andrews, Mary Martin and Noël Coward.  If you've read her 2002 autobiography, Just Lucky I Guess, you'll already be familiar with some of the stories she shared during our interview - but actually hearing her tell them is a whole nother experience.  I just sat there on the phone in a state of bliss.

Obviously I think the world of this lovely lady, who is best known for her brilliant performance as the matchmaking widow Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly!, for which she won the 1964 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.  She's played the role over 5,000 times, which is simply amazing.  Her other stage credits include Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1949), Wonderful Town (1953), The Vamp (1956), Show Girl (1961), Lorelei (1974) and Legends (1986) with Mary Martin.  Carol also received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her memorable performance as Muzzy Van Hossmere in Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967).  In the last few years, she and Harry have spent most of their time promoting arts education in California schools through the Dr. Carol Channing & Harry Kullijian Foundation for the Arts as well as providing musical instruments for low-income school districts and funding scholarships for students and teachers in the arts.  The couple is now planning to launch a nationwide awareness campaign to get the arts back into public schools all across the country.  These two kids are not slowing down anytime soon.

I could not be more thrilled and honored to have the fabulous Dr. Channing (she received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from California State University, Stanislaus in 2004) here on the Dish today to discuss her career and answer a few pop culture questions.

So here are 10 reasons why I love the sensational songstress and actress after watching her strut her musical stuff tonight:

Let's Get Lost: This Is Your Life, Richard Alpert

I never get tired of watching actor Nestor Carbonell as the mysterious Richard Alpert, but last night's episode of Lost will not rank as one of my favorites. I was really looking forward to a Richard-centric show - and although I was never bored, I missed the switching back and forth between Parallel Time and the island that has been going on all season. And I wanted to see some other characters besides the handsome Mr. Alpert - whom I must confess wasn't looking all that attractive last night. The long hair and beard just didn't do much for me, but that's just my personal preference. Anyway, the episode was interesting, but I wanted a break from Richard and all his anguished drama after awhile. So my review this week will be very different from my previous ones as I'm just going to tell everything in chronological order. And away we go:

The show opened with Ilana beat up and bandaged in the hospital, where she was visited by Jacob (Mark Pellegrino, who is also nice eye candy). He informed her that he needed her to protect the remaining six candidates. Meanwhile, on the island in 2007, Ilana and her gang of survivors (including Jack, Sun, Hurley and Ben) discussed the whole candidate thing, and she revealed that Jacob told her that Richard would know what to do next. However, Mr. Alpert gave out a funny giggle before informing them that they were all dead and in Hell. He then decided to go off into the jungle to join up with MIB (Man in Black) Locke.

We then flashbacked to 1867 on the Canary Islands, where Richard rushed off on his horse to get some medicine for his dying wife, Isabella, from a nasty doctor, whom he ended up accidentally killing. So Isabella died and Richard went to prison, where he was going to be hung for his crime. Fortunately, the captain of a ship - the Black Rock - saved Richard's life by taking him to America. Unfortunately, the Black Rock crashed on the island during a storm, and the crazy captain proceeded to kill all his surviving slaves. Fortunately, the fabulous Smoke Monster showed up in the nick of time and killed the captain before he could stab Richard. Isabella then showed up and told her bewildered husband that they were dead and in Hell. Unfortunately, the Smoke Monster then returned and appeared to kill poor Isabella offscreen - even though she was already dead.

So Richard was left all alone until Jacob's nemesis, the Man in Black (played by Titus Welliver, whose got a sexy quality of his own), showed up and revealed that he was the Smoke Monster - but he didn't kill Isabella. Instead the devil - Jacob - took her, and now MIB wanted Richard to go kill him in order to be reunited with her. Of course, Jacob wasn't going to fall for this lame plan, and he told Richard the truth (I think) that he wasn't dead or in Hell. Apparently MIB believes that people are inherently evil, while Jacob believes they are inherently good. So Jacob brings people to the island to disprove MIB's theory. Sounds simple enough, doesn't it? Then Jacob gave Richard his job of being his representative and granted his wish to live forever. Richard later informed a disappointed MIB that he was no longer playing for his team.

We now returned to the present, where Richard wanted to change his mind and join MIB's team. However, Hurley showed up and told him that Isabella sent him after Richard because he had an earlier conversation with the dead woman. Hurley also revealed that she said that Richard had to stop MIB Locke from leaving the island or they would all go to Hell.

Meanwhile, in the past, Jacob and the Man in Black hung out together and chatted. Jacob won't let MIB leave the island, which pisses off MIB, who wants to kill him. I'm not sure what it all means, but I will keep watching until the very end. I have to because I need to know how the Jack/Kate/Sawyer triangle will be resolved - and I'm still waiting for my beloved Juliet to return for a guest appearance. Next week's episode is all about Sun and Jin - will the couple finally be reunited? I certainly hope so. Until then, get lost.

Remembering Robert Culp

I always liked actor Robert Culp, who died this morning at the age of 79 after falling outside his Los Angeles home. However, I doubt many obituaries about his life and career will mention his appearance in the January 1975 issue of Oui magazine, in which he and his fourth wife, Sheila, were featured in a nude photo spread entitled, "The Private Life of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Culp" - and on the cover there was the enticing blurb of "The Robert Culps Get It On". I'm only mentioning these provocative pics because it is one of my earliest memories of finding another man attractive - even though I didn't fully understand these confusing feelings at the time. I was a young teenager back in the late '70s when I discovered the magazine in my parents' attic - along with the rest of my father's collection of old Playboys and other periodicals for men. Of course, Mom and Dad weren't home at the time.

Anyway, in addition to being a handsome man, Robert Culp starred in many films - I think the 1969 wife-swapping comedy-drama, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, in which he played Natalie Wood's husband, was his best movie - and television shows, including I Spy (1965-68) with Bill Cosby and The Greatest American Hero (1981-83).  The actor was also connected to another popular TV series - Dallas - during all the "Who Shot J.R.?" hoopla in 1980.  It was widely reported that Culp would replace Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing if Hagman decided not to return to the series because of contract negotiations.  The July 14,1980 issue of People magazine said that the wounded character would be badly burned in an ambulance wreck en route to the hospital and then, following plastic surgery, he would emerge looking like "Hagman's designated replacement - said to be Robert Culp." But Hagman did return to the show (as a much wealthier man), and Culp later said this was just a false rumor and that he was never contacted by anyone from Dallas about taking over the role.

And that is my fond remembrance of the talented actor.  May he rest in peace.

Betty Buckley & Tuc Watkins to Star Off-Broadway in White's Lies

I received a press release yesterday that couldn't be more perfect for this blog: a new Off-Broadway comedy starring the fabulous Tony Award-winning Betty Buckley and the incredibly talented Desperate Housewives and One Life to Live star Tuc Watkins. What more could a gay man want in a play?   I guess I wouldn't mind if Betty crooned a tune at some point, but other than that, White's Lies by Ben Andron sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Watkins will be replacing the previously announced Scott Patterson, who has been cast in a television pilot. Although I loved Patterson as Luke on Gilmore Girls, Watkins just has that extra something special that makes my raspberry swirl. The guy is gorgeous and funny - and he will definitely be making a future appearance on my list of the Hottest Hunks of Daytime Soaps. If you've never seen his performance as the scheming con artist and ladies' man David Vickers on One Life to Live, you are missing out on one of the most hilarious characters to ever grace a daytime soap.

I could go on and on about the amazing Mr. Watkins, but the point of this post is to tell you all about White's Lies, which will begin previews at Manhattan's New World Stages (340 West 50th St.) on April 12 and open on May 6. Watkins will play Joe White, a bachelor divorce lawyer who's scared stiff at the prospect of marriage and kids. However, when his mother (Buckley) desperately wants him to start a family, he does what any good son would do - he makes one up! Of course, this lie soon turns into an outrageous journey full of twists and turns.

Directed by Bob Cline, the play also stars Peter Scolari (from TV's Newhart and Bosom Buddies), Christy Carlson Romano, Rena Strober and Jimmy Ray Bennett. Tickets are $60-75, and you can purchase them by phone at (212) 239-6200 or online at www.WhitesLiesOnStage.com.

Below you can enjoy Tuc Watkins in all his half-naked glory on One Life to Live and on a behind-the-scenes tour of his Wisteria Lane home on Desperate Housewives - and listen to the wonderful Betty Buckley sing "Meadowlark".

Groovy Web Series: A Pretty Season Finale

I was planning to feature five web series last week, but then I decided to wait and blog about Pretty after its season finale debuted yesterday. For those of you who might not be familiar with this new mockumentary show by writer and director Steve Silverman, I sang its praises here on the Dish last month, calling it "one helluva hoot" with "a wicked and sharp sense of humor" and "a first-rate cast of comedic actors". And having watched the final three episode since then, I can safely say that Pretty is still one of the best and funniest web series currently airing. So if you're a fan of Christopher Guest films (Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show), I highly recommend that you check out Pretty and all its hilarious characters:

Michael Champagne (Sam Pancake): A proud pageant father who believes that "tan girls win pageants - like Miss Vanessa Williams."

Annette Champagne (Stacy McQueen): Michael's precocious 5-year-old daughter who causes a scandal at the Miss Star Eyes Pageant.

Ribina Champagne (Dee Freeman): Michael's unfaithful wife who comes to a shocking realization in the season finale.

Ethan Champagne (Troy Conrad): Michael's brother who is a "free agent" when it comes to sex.

Parker Kensington-Parker (Terri Simmons): The Director of the Miss Star Eyes Pageant whose sexual shenanigans eventually catch up to her.

Royce Adams (Michael Taylor Gray): The flamboyant Asst. Pageant Director - and a former teen idol - who is only one bullet away from running the show.

Pretty's season finale does end on a major cliffhanger, but this just makes me look forward even more to a second fizzy season of "Champagne" bubbly. You can watch the final three episodes below, and to see the entire series, go to the show's website at www.prettytheseries.com or its YouTube channel. You can also become a Facebook fan or a Twitter follower of the series.

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Mildred Pierce

Every Tuesday I post five questions relating to television or film, and the first person who sends me the correct answers wins the highly coveted Auntie Mame Award (for excellence in trivia).

Please send your answers for this week's questions to deepdishdrama@aol.com or via a private Facebook message at www.facebook.com/marcharshbarger (DO NOT post your answers on here where everyone can see them or they will be deleted). In honor of Joan Crawford's birthday today, this week's theme is her 1945 film, Mildred Pierce (for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress). And I just learned that Kate Winslet will be playing Mildred in a new HBO remake of the movie directed by Todd Haynes and also starring Guy Pearce, Evan Rachel Wood and Melissa Leo. Although I like all those people, I still have to ask the question:

Why???

I mean, come on, we all know that it won't be better than the original. Oh well, here are this week's questions:

1) What are the names of Mildred's two daughters?

2) Who plays Mildred's friend, Ida?

3) Who plays Lottie the maid?

4) What does Mildred do for a living right after she separates from her first husband?

5) Who shoots and kills Mildred's second husband, Monte?

Last week Matt Conlon answered the following questions correctly about the 1962 film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?:

1) What is the first name of the sisters' cleaning woman? Elvira

2) What does Jane serve Blanche as a covered dish? Blanche's beloved parakeet and a rat

3) Who tried to run over her sister with a car? Blanche

4) Who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the film? Bette Davis

5) What real-life sisters starred in the 1991 television remake? Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave

Listen to 'Deep Dish' on WGN Radio

If you want to listen to my recent interview on WGN Radio in which I discuss all Dish that is Deep, click here.

Deeper Dish with Denis O'Hare

I've been a fan of actor Denis O'Hare since I saw him in the play, Lloyd's Prayer, at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in 1988. Since then he has appeared in such films as The Anniversary Party (2001), Milk (2008) and Edge of Darkness (2010) and on the television drama, Brothers & Sisters, as Rob Lowe's campaign manager, Travis March. The openly gay actor has also found great success on Broadway in the musical revivals of Cabaret (1998), Assassins (for which he received a Tony Award nomination in 2004), and Sweet Charity (2005). However, O'Hare's most memorable stage role has to be his Tony Award-winning performance as Mason Marzac, a gay business manager who falls in love with the game of baseball, in Richard Greenberg's play, Take Me Out (2003). He stole the show - even from the hunky naked actors taking a shower onstage.

And now Denis O'Hare's career is going to reach a pop culture high as he has joined the cast of HBO's hit vampire drama, True Blood, in which he will play Russell Edgington, the Vampire King of Mississippi in the upcoming third season. I can't wait to see him on the show - and I am delighted to have this amazing actor here on the Dish today to discuss his career and answer a few pop culture questions.

The 50 Hottest Hunks of Daytime Soaps, Part 1

Yes, I know I recently posted my 50 Grooviest Guys of Daytime Soaps, but there's a significant difference between a groovy guy and a hot hunk. The former is a good actor who has created a memorable character, while the latter is a piece of prime beefcake who should always remain shirtless. Now this is not to say that the hunks on my list aren't also talented actors, but my main criteria for choosing them was not their thespian skills. I initially had around 130 possible candidates, which means 80 studs got kicked to the curb as I narrowed down my list. This process wasn't easy, folks, but it was a lot of fun. And hopefully I've chosen a few of your favorite fellas.
