The Top 100 Groovy Songs of the 1960s

Last month I posted my Top 100 Groovy Songs of the 1970s and the 1980s, and now I've selected my favorite tunes of the 1960s (in chronological order). I was surprised to discover that this list was the most difficult one to do. I easily could have chosen 20 Beatles songs (and only 5 made the cut). And I'm not ashamed to admit that Lesley Gore's "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" almost made it, but she lost out to Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" (the latter is a far better tune, but the former just makes me happy whenever I hear it). There are so many great songs from this rich decade of music, but some tough decisions had to be made. I hope you like my list, but if you don't, I suggest you go make your own and have fun pulling your hair out.

Great list, Marc (as always). You have the best taste. I actually lived through that decade as a teenager. I loved & still love the music from the 60s.
Beyond The Sea is in my top 5 of all time. I want it played at my memorial service.
I would add:
Crying- Roy Orbison
Different Drum- Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Ponies
It Was A Very Good Year- Frank Sinatra
A Natural Woman- Aretha Franklin
Jackson- Johnny Cash & June Carter
Never My Love- The Association
The Letter- The Boxtops
Space Oddity- David Bowie
People- Brabara Streisand
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me- Dusty Springfield

& also in my all time top 5: God Only Knows- the Beach Boys

Those are all very good choices, Stephen, but many such songs had to be cut. It's not easy narrowing a list down to only 100--especially for the 1960s, which was a decade rich with groovy music!

I've never thought of a list of X songs per decade. I'll try this (using yours as a starting point, of course) and see what I come up with. I only listened from 65 to 70 and from 77 to 84, but I know those partial decades well.
My partner and I played what dozen books, CDs and DVDs would you take to a (fully equipped) desert island for a year? Whittling that list down was difficult; we didn't try it by decade.

Great list as I grew up in the 60's. But missing are two great hits: The song always voted the top song of the decade - Bridge Over Troubled Water, and of course Unchained Melody - the Righeous Brothers version released in mid 60's.
